On 18–19 March 2026, dr Anna Batorczak, MERGED Coordinator at the University of Warsaw, participated in the international symposium “Universities as Change Agents in Sustainable Development”. The event was organised by Tallinn University, with co-organisers including Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, SustainERA and the Baltic University Programme.
The symposium highlighted the need for the academic sector to become a real, measurable and proactive driver of change for sustainable development — moving beyond fragmented initiatives and purely theoretical discourse. During two inspiring days, academics, researchers and representatives of non-governmental organizations from across Europe and beyond explored diverse approaches to teaching and implementing sustainable development within universities and through cross-sector collaboration.
In her presentation “Studying Sustainable Development – experiences from the University of Warsaw”, Anna Batorczak shared the experience of the University Centre for Environmental Studies (UCBS) in delivering international programmes dedicated to sustainability: theSustainable Development programme and the MERGED programme. She also presented the results of a short student survey examining levels of study satisfaction, suggested improvements, and students’ future career aspirations.
Participation in the symposium proved to be a highly inspiring and motivating experience. It is worth taking advantage of the wide range of training and conferences offered to teachers and students by the Baltic University Programme.
