On November 6, 2025, the University of Warsaw hosted Green Day under the theme “Energy of the Future.” This initiative, addressed to the entire academic community and Warsaw residents, aims to promote environmental protection and share experiences and inspiration. The program included lectures, workshops, and a Garage Sale Zone.

The University’s Center for Environmental and Sustainable Development Research participated in this important university event. Our unit had a stand where UCBS students offered educational games to attendees and informed them about UCBS’s environmental and sustainability initiatives.

Green Day was also an opportunity to present to the academic community the first environmental report prepared by the University of Warsaw. The University of Warsaw’s 2023-2024 Environmental Report is the first comprehensive study to document the University of Warsaw’s relationship with the natural environment on multiple levels. The University’s activities in this area aim to rationalize resource use and minimize negative impacts, as well as undertake initiatives that improve the state of the environment. It is encouraging that the University of Warsaw takes its environmental impact so seriously, and even more so that it is making progress in this area, as evidenced by the following facts:

  • The University of Warsaw’s total ecological footprint, reflecting the University’s demand for natural resources and ecosystem services, amounted to 27,830.23 gha (global hectares) in 2023, and 25,872.34 gha in 2024;
  • In 2023, greenhouse gas emissions related to fuel combustion in boilers and engines, and from the use of refrigerants, amounted to 1,800 tons of CO₂ equivalent (tCO2e), and in 2024, 1,200 tCO2e.

In the section on environmental education and awareness, the Report pays particular attention to UCBS, as an university unit specializing in studies aiming in environmental protection and sustainable development. In the Report the MERGED project is also mentioned as the first at the University of Warsaw joint Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters program run by universities in the 4EU+ Alliance.

MERGED students made a special contribution to Green Day celebrations at the University of Warsaw. As part of the Communication Education and Cooperation course, a permanent clothing swap was established at the Faculty of Geology. This small initiative is initiating a major shift towards a sustainable lifestyle.
